Blue Tits

Up

I know what you're thinking, and you've found the wrong site for that.

Instead, I'm delighted to say that, for the second year running our bird box is home to a family of Blue Tits.  The box is located on the rear of the house, north facing and at this time of year - as you can see  - is disappearing under a climbing 'Jasminium Officialis'.

We've had one brood already this year but I've no idea how many chicks were hatched.  I'd imagine that all managed to fledge, as when I did look all that remained was a single feather - and a pellet deposit on the floor beneath the box.  Love those parents, very house-proud!

As you'll see from the picture (taken 18 May - slightly out of focus, sorry about that) the new parents have ten - count them! - hungry mouths to feed.

We'll try to sneak some additional photos over the next week or so, but we won't rush it as we do not want to scare the parents away.

This latest photo was taken on May 21st.  Seems we've lost one chick, only nine beaks showing.

For a variety of reasons, not least of which was the desire not to disturb the nest unduly, I did not revisit the nest until today, Jun 4th.  I'm pleased to say that seven of the ten have flown, which is a remarkable achievement for two hard working parents.

If anyone knows a good (cheep!) webcam solution that I can install in the box for future use, please let me know via the Contact page, link above.  Thanks.
